Curriculum

Grove Park School caters for pupils in Reception, KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 & KS5.

Pupils have a wide range of SEND and the curriculum is designed to meet the needs of learners with learning difficulties (PMLD, SLD and MLD), autism and other complex needs.

As far as possible, class groups are organised by National Curriculum Key Stage but due to the size of the school population, there are children and young people who work in a class with more than one-year group.  When placing pupils in a group, we consider age, SEND, social needs and academic ability.  For example, a KS1 class may include year 1 and 2 and a KS2 class may include pupils from years 3 to 6. Pupils’ needs are kept at the centre of decision-making. Class groups may therefore include learners of all levels of complexity.

On rare occasions, a pupil may need to be taught outside of their normal phase. This would be subject to significant discussion between the school and parents/carers as well as other professionals who may be involved with the pupil. This will only be undertaken with the best interests of the pupil at the heart.

The school believes that a flexible curriculum model best meets the changing needs of pupils. This ensures all pupils access learning appropriate for their age and stage of development. Learning is differentiated by cognitive level and need using a range of appropriate strategies which are designed to support teaching and learning for this population.

Facilitating inclusion and independence enables pupils to transition successfully through the school and into adult life.
